Featured Bird Photograph: August 2009: American Flamingo
Other Featured Bird Photos
The Flamingo is named after its rich "flaming-colored" plumage. Its color is related to their diet of shrimps and other crustaceans, which are rich in carotene pigments.
The American Flamingo, Phoenicopterus ruber (featured below) is the largest flamingo. It can stand 6 feet tall (almost 2 meters).
It was a hard choice, and indeed we have two photos that stood out (and there were many beautiful ones besides them -- it was a tough choice!) The best photos can be found on the various Flamingo species pages. We left them the highest resolution possible - so it may take a moment or so to load, but it will be worth your while! Links to the photographer webpages are provided underneath each photo.
