Ficus Alii

Plants that Detoxify the Air

Ficus AlliThe Ficus Alii, FICUS maclellandii 'Alii', is a large, ornamental, man-made hybrid plant that is rapidly gaining in popularity as it is more durable and easier to grow than other plants of the same genus and lacks their finickiness and tendency to shed leaves.

Description:

It can be found in many forms, including bushes, braids, standards and spiraled trunks. Its slender dark green leaves make it an extremely attractive plant.

Its relatively thick leaves are long and narrow, growing from 3 inches to 10 inches long. New growth is sometimes tinted bronze and later matures to a deep, rich green.

Planting / Care:

  • Light Requirements: Provide filtered sunlight or bright indirect light. As with nearly all Ficus plants, if your plant is situated against a wall, it's best to rotate the plant every few days to prevent the back of the plant from loosing its leaves.

  • Watering: Allow the surface of the soil to dry to the touch between waterings. Water with tepid water, as cold water may cause leaf loss. This plant does not require as much water as other Ficus and over watering will cause leaf drop and leaf spotting.  It's important to allow the soil to dry out between waterings. When watering, water thoroughly and completely. This may mean watering once and then again an hour later as the dry soil begins to absorb water. Do not allow the plant to sit in water.

  • Temperatures: This plant prefers a temperature range of 55° to 75°, although exposure to lower temperatures above 45° is tolerated for short periods of time. Keep out of cold drafts.

  • Fertilizing: Feed bi-monthly during the winter, monthly when your plant is growing.

  • Pests: Relatively resistant to pests. Watch for scale.
