Breeding behavior of the Green-rumped Parrotlet.: An article from: Wilson Bulletin [HTML] (Digital) Breeding behavior of Green-rumped parrotlets (Forpus passerinus) in a Venezuelan llanos was studied from 1988 to 1989. A high degree of differentiation in parental roles was seen, with the female doing all of the incubation and brooding, and the male doing most of the foraging at a stage when the female can hardly leave the nest. Courtship behavior seems to strengthen pair cohesion. This is essential in the competition for nest sites and ultimately for reproductive success, since the female and the brood are very dependent on the male for food at that stage of the breeding cycle. |
